Anzac Day Ceremonies
Principal’s Report
Welcome back to everyone for Term 2. It has been a very settled start and as you walk around classrooms it is pleasing to see students so highly engaged in quality learning experiences. We have many upper primary students supporting our younger students during lunch times leading activities in the early childhood playground.
You may notice some changes to our school yard recently, with the building of new fences which really define our beautiful school grounds and enable us to safely open up other spaces for quiet play. A number of areas around the school have also been freshly painted. The outdoor learning environment is very important and attractive spaces for learning are valued. In the coming weeks we hope to see some more changes to our outdoor learning areas.
Mother’s Day Stall
Students will be given the opportunity to purchase something for their mums at our Mother’s Day Stall this week. On Wednesday all classes will be able to visit the stall run and organised by the School Association. For Kinder classes this will be on Tuesday and Thursday. A very big thank you to everyone for their generosity in donating items and for the overwhelming support from the SA, fundraising committee and parents who have done an outstanding job assisting the stall set up and sales. We ask that younger students bring money in a labelled envelope. Items will range up to $5 for sale.
Strive for Five
Our current Strive for Five Focus is around Being Safe. Teachers are constantly talking to students around the importance of safety, in the classroom, school yard and considering the safety of others in work and play. Making sensible choices is a very important part of this. Online safety and appropriate use of social media is another important safety consideration.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN testing will be held across Australia for all students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 next week. The National Assessment Program assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for students as they progress through school and life. This provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN tests are just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process - they do not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance. They also provide information about how educational programs are working and whether young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy. Where possible it is very important for every year 3 and 5 student every day throughout the week. NAPLAN is not about passing or failing but about assessing learning progress.
5/6 Sport
During terms two and three all year 5/6 students will participate in a sports roster selecting from netball, football or hockey. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn and develop new skills, work in a team environment and to mix with students from other Northern Midlands schools. The first winter sports day is rostered for the 18th May with students participating in a variety of sports against Hagley here at Perth.
PPS Community Connections
Eskleigh
Last week we began a community connection with Eskleigh with some year 5/6 students visiting. This program will continue throughout the year with many of our students involved. Some of our early childhood classes visited the Cenotaph to learn about their local community and the importance of this Perth landmark.
ANZAC Parade
Thank you to all students who participated in the ANZAC parade and to those in the Choir who sang at the ANZAC day service. We had over 50 students and many parents who joined us. Our students were wonderful ambassadors for young people in our community. Thank you to Ms Dick for leading the choir in the singing of ‘In Flanders Fields’. On the first day of Term 2 we held our school ANZAC service which was commendably led by the Student Cabinet. We were very fortunate to have one of our Esk Band teachers perform The Last Post and the Reveille as a part of this service.
National Walk to School Safely
Next Friday the 18th of May is National Walk Safely to School Day. Details as follows:
NMPSSA State Carnival
Good luck to our PPS representatives in the State Athletics Carnival this Friday. We know you will proudly represent PPS.
Parking in Fairtlough Street
We ask parents when dropping off and picking up students in Fairtlough Street to be mindful of residence access to driveways by not parking over them. We appreciate your help with this.
In the coming weeks we have our Cross Country which will be held on Thursday 24th May. Races begin at 11.00am with year 6 students. The session will end with Kindergarten students at 12.40pm.
School newsletter will be published from Term 2 on a Wednesday fortnight.
We warmly welcome Ace and Indy to the Perth Primary school community this term.
Happy Mother’s day to all our wonderful mums for this coming Sunday. May your children spoil you with lots of love and attention.
