Principal’s Report

It’s hard to believe that it is already the end of Term 1. Thank you to all families for ensuring that their child(ren) come to school each day ready and organised for quality learning to take place. Each and every day counts towards students building the skills and understandings to equip them for their future. Attendance rates at school are strong predictors of student success.

K-2 Fun Day

Last Thursday our K-2 children enjoyed a morning of active participation in our annual K-2 Fun Day. Activities included 70m dash, sack relays, egg and spoon races, rob the nest and parachute. Children throughly enjoyed themselves and many parents watched on and cheered in support. A special thank you to Mr Eeles for organising such a enjoyable experience.

Moderation Day

Students will finish for term break this Thursday 12th April. On Friday teachers will participate in a Moderation Day for all Tasmanian Government schools. Teachers will be involved in moderation of literacy work at Perth before joining with Connect 6 Primary School colleagues during the afternoon. This is a very important opportunity for teachers to connect and extend their learning which leads to improving student outcomes. Our teacher assistant team will also participate in professional learning.

Staff Movements

At the end of this term we farewell Mrs Lovell who will be returning to her position at Lilydale District School. Thank you Linda for your commitment and dedication to PPS over the past 12 months. Linda’s efficiency, high level of professionalism and support across the school has been highly appreciated. At the beginning of Term 2 we welcome back Mrs Dunn who will be returning as our School Business Manager. Leanne has been busy with her involvement in Les Miserables recently and is looking forward to re-joining the PPS team.

Mrs Craw will be extending her leave into Term 2. We will continue to enjoy her regular visists and look forward to her returning to work. We welcome back Mr Johnson who is returning from leave and look forward to him joining us refreshed and relaxed. Mrs Adams will continue in her leadership role along with support from Mrs Chandler and Mrs Colson. Mr Eeles will continue to lead PE at PPS. I would like to acknowledge and thank all staff for their commitment and dedication to improving student outcomes over the past term. Working together as a team is so powerful and rewarding in so many ways!

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program - Literacy & Numeracy is scheduled for week 3 of next term. All students across Australia in years 3, 5, 7 & 9 will participate in testing during this week beginning on May 15th. NAPLAN tests the skills that are essential for every child to progress through school life in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. Please read the attached information around NAPLAN and discuss any further questions you may have with your child’s class teacher.

Community Connections

We congratulate and acknowledge the wonderful work of Georgia Baker a past Perth Primary School student who has competed during the past week at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Our school values of Aspiration, Respect, Courage and Creativity closely support Georgia’s journey as an elite athlete. We are very proud to be able to continue to connect with and support Georgia at PPS.

Student Cabinet and Student Parliament

The Student Cabinet and Parliament are continuing in their leadership of Mission Possible to support the many families in need of items this winter, led by the City Mission. Thank you to families who have already donated food and hygiene items. Please continue to support this cause which will continue after the school holidays. We are very fortunate to have the support of City Mission at PPS with our Inside Out for Kids programs at PPS which supports many students across the school.

This week Student Cabinet/Parliament members from year 4 will be working with Engineers and Planners who have been engaged by the Northern Midlands Council to prepare the Northern Midlands Land Use and Development Strategy. Student consultation is designed to engage younger members of the community to find out what they value about their local town, what they think could be improved and what they would like to see happen in the future. Consultation will be conducted in accordance with the Involving Children in Decision Making guidelines prepared by the Commissioner for Children Tasmania. We look forward to hearing about their ideas!

ANZAC Day

Students from PPS will again be involved in the ANZAC Day march and the school choir will perform at the service. All community members are welcome to join us on Wednesday April 25th, week 2 of the school holidays. We will be walking from the United Service Station at Perth at 8.30am. We hope you can join us if you are free.

School Association

Nominations for our final member to the School Association Committee closed last Friday (as advertised in the last newsletter). I am pleased to announce that Kelly Barrett has been successful in her nomination. Congratulations Kelly.

We wish all members of our school community a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to seeing everyone ready for a busy Term 2 commencing on Monday 30th April.

Parent Information

Lost Property

We endeavor to return all named items to children via their classroom. Found items usually find their way to the front office, where they remain in the “lost property” basket until the end of each term. Please discourage your child from bringing valuables and toys to school.

Please clearly write YOUR child’s name on all items of clothing and other property they will bring to school. While you and your child may understand they wear clothing with other names written on the label, it is difficult to return these items to their owner if they become lost.

Parent Volunteers

Our school operates with the support of a range of volunteers who assist in many types of activities across the school. Canteen and classroom help, and assistance in our library are just some of the ways in which parents and community members can support our school. If you are able to help out, even on an occasional basis please speak with your child’s teacher.

Working with Vulnerable People

All volunteers, contractors and other visitors are required to have a current Registration for Working with Vulnerable People. You will need to complete the application on the Department of Justice website at

  • Print out the “application receipt” or record the reference number.
  • Take the “application receipt” to a Service Tasmania for photo, identity confirmation and payment.
  • Registration cards generally take 6 weeks to arrive via mail.

Community News……

Perth ANZAC Ceremony

This year ANZAC Day occurs on Wednesday 25th April, week 2 of the school holidays. Perth Primary School will be continuing our long term commitment to this commemorative occasion by marching in the Perth parade and the choir will sing as part of the service.

In order to fully plan this community opportunity we will need to know the number of students who will attending by Wednesday 10th April.

Students marching in the school group need to meet us at the United Service Station at 8:20 am. We will march together to the Cenotaph. All students are welcome to join the choir in singing ‘In Flanders Fields’.

Thank you for your support of our school in enabling your child to participate in this important community event. Please sign and return the form below to indicate that your child will participate and whether a parent will be joining us on the day.

Coles Vouchers

Thank you for supporting our school with vouchers which will provide fabulous sporting equipment for all children to use. Please submit vouchers at the school office.
