Principal’s Report

Quality learning

As we begin week four of the 2018 school year, we continue to be impressed by the quality of learning at Perth Primary. When in classrooms, the first thing noticed is well-structured learning programs and highly engaged students who are focused and challenging themselves.

Another important aspect of our teaching and learning program is MYTERN. This is well embedded into the Perth culture and supports students to take control over their emotions. One important part of MYTERN is using a PET (Personal Emotional Tool) to help us when we are on a rough, red road and feel out of control. PETs assist us in gaining control, while building our resilience and understanding of emotional wellbeing. Teachers are talking with students about different PETs they can access at school and at home. We appreciate your support with the power of this language, when using the language of MYTERN at home. I encourage you to speak with your child’s teacher if you would like any more information around MYTERN.

Leadership

Congratulations to all students who nominated for House Captain and Student Parliament leaders. It was wonderful to witness many year 6 students presenting speeches they had prepared to their peers and younger students, vying for a position. Congratulations to the following students who were elected by their peers as House Captains.

Lyons – Makedde and Brodie     Hirst - Klarissa and Tylah     Bramich – Mackenzie and Harry

Congratulations to our Student Cabinet members who were elected for 2018 - Patrick, Caden, Logan, Makedde, Abby, Annika, Chloe, Evie, and Mackenzie. We look forward to these students leading us in a number of different ways at PPS throughout the year. Students will be joined by representatives from each class who comprise the Student Parliament.

There are numerous other leadership opportunities for students across the school and we encourage students to adopt a leadership mindset and to ‘think' like a leader. Students can be leaders by helping and looking out for others, becoming more aware of their personal strengths and how they can be used to take positive action, by having the courage to try new things and challenge themselves. Being a team player, working with others and sharing positive energy is vital. Congratulations to Bree, Maddyson, Max A, Caden, Patrick, Thomas L, Hayley and Michaela for receiving Principals Awards at our recent assembly for displaying leadership.

School Association News

Many families enjoyed a lovely evening last Thursday for the Welcome Back BBQ. A special thank you to the School Association for providing the barbeque for the evening. This was a wonderful opportunity to visit classrooms and enjoy an informal chat with teachers and other community members.

The School Association are holding a cake stall for the Election Polling booth at the Perth Community Centre this coming weekend, Saturday 3rd March. Students will arrive home this afternoon with a paper plate which if you are able to fill would be most appreciated. Please bring labelled food to the hall on Friday or on Saturday morning from 8am. If any parents are available to assist for an hour on the stall there is a roster at the school office. All money raised will go towards Arts opportunities for students during 2018.

Canteen

The canteen opened for the first time last Thursday with a new look menu available. It was great to see so many students ordering and remembering to recycle many of the packaged items. Our planned menu ensures we can maintain our Silver accreditation for Tasmanian School Canteens. A new online system of ordering is available and simple to use. Please download the App Qkr - create a logon, connect to Perth Primary School and place a lunch order. Information is provided further in the newsletter.

Jan Maher will be managing the canteen this year in addition to her Teacher Assistant role. Thank you to Jan, Juanita and Linda for all their work in ensuring our students have a quality canteen. Many hands make light work…. If you are available to work at all to support Jan in the canteen please leave your name at the school office. All dates are listed for the term and any support is much appreciated.

Clean Up Australia Day

All PPS students will be participating in Clean Up Australia day on Thursday 1st March from 1:30pm. We are delighted that some of our community members will also be joining us. There will be some volunteers from Eskleigh, Perth Lions Club members and possibly Day Care as part of our clean up. Parents are welcome to join us but please ensure you sign in before leaving the school.
