Principal’s Report
The sense of excitement, anticipation, fun and wonder in our school community has been easy to see, hear and feel at the moment with so many engaging learning, physical and social experiences for students to enjoy. Term 4 is such a busy time with many competing priorities – yet learning must remain our core business. Many class groups have excursions planned which link directly to learning and inquiry units and camp and other sports commitments also keep children and teachers very busy. Social and emotional learning outcomes play a critical role in helping to prepare children for future success. As we review our Strategic Plan we have been carefully considering the recent research into brain and character development which identifies the following character strengths as key. They are called ‘Game Changers’ due to their important role in a young person’s future success:
Optimism |
Gratitude |
Social Intelligence |
Curiosity |
Enthusiasm |
Self-Control |
Perseverance (also known as GRIT) |
We will be looking at these character strengths in more depth and detail in the future.
Camp Week
Today our year 5/6 students and a group of six adults left school at 8am, headed for three days and two nights of fun, adventure and a jam-packed program of learning. The south of the State is the destination where they will learn about history, geography, the political system of the State and many other things. Student wellbeing, relationships and many other social outcomes will have a very high focus. There will be some changes at school as we accommodate staffing and timetabling demands which are necessary with such an intensive program as camp.
We know our students will have an amazing time and will return on Thursday afternoon feeling content but exhausted. Teachers will also be ready for a long sleep in their own beds after being ‘on duty’ for 24 hours a day for several days. Thank you in advance for your outstanding preparation and for being away from your families and homes to provide this exciting opportunity for our students.
Class Excursions
During this week years 3/4, Kinder and years 1/2 will be participating in different excursions, depending on the learning which has been planned and studied as part of their classroom learning program. Please discuss with your child’s classroom teacher for further details if you have questions.
Nude Food Day
On Friday all children had the opportunity to taste and try a wide range of fruit and vegetables which were beautifully presented and delivered to classes by Juanita our school nurse. The choice of such a delicious range of beautiful fresh food was made possible through the support of the Perth Lions Club. We are most grateful for their generosity. Nude Food Day is part of our Move Well Eat Well program – a whole school focus on helping children to learn about and develop a healthy lifestyle. Key messages from MWEW are the benefits of regular and rigorous exercise, drinking water only and eating fresh vegetables and fruit. We hope to hold another Nude Food Day in Term 1 next year with more children and families able to participate in bringing lunches filled with fresh food – nothing processed or in packages. Juanita will continue to publish creative lunch-box and recipe ideas to help packing school lunches. Congratulations to everyone involved in taking positive steps towards a healthy lifestyle.

Infant Fun Day
On Friday our foundation to year 2 classes travelled to Campbell Town to participate in the annual Fun Day which is a long-standing tradition amongst Northern Midlands schools. This events fits well within our MWEW focus as the day has a high focus on participation in fun and energetic activities which help to develop physical and social skills. Reports from children and teachers returning from their day were all positive, with everyone tired but happy after a great day.

Halloween Disco
Thank you to members of the fundraising group who co-ordinated the disco for children on Friday evening. We certainly appreciate your time and efforts. Fun was the order of the event with some very creative costumes. It was certainly difficult to tell the faces behind some of the clever make-up! Children enjoyed themselves and had lots of fun. Thank you on behalf of the whole school community for your time and efforts. A profit of over $450 was made which will go towards several projects identified by the School Association earlier this year. These include: Dance program currently underway for K-6 students, a contribution towards PPS ESK Band contribution and a new large sign for the Seccombe Street roundabout which is scheduled for construction later this year.
Cake Stall at Devon Hills
Congratulations to the organisers of the cake stall at the Devon Hills Garage Sale at Devon Hills on Saturday. This was a spontaneous fundraiser but helps raise our profile in this area where there are 280 residences. Our professional new signs and banner were on display at the cake stall and helped to showcase our school in a positive and professional light. Thank you to everyone involved in helping to make the cake stall a success. The cake stall raised $232 which will be going towards a project in the early childhood outdoor area.
Esk Band 2018 EOI
Last Tuesday we were fortunate to host a visit from the Clarence High School Stage and Concert Band as they returned to Hobart on the last leg of their Tasmanian tour. We were their last stop. The band/s entertained and enthralled our audience for almost an hour, with all classes thoroughly entertained by the music and theatre of the performance. Students on tour ranged from grades 7 to 10 with every student taking on the role of ambassador and role-model for their school. Several of the students were outstanding as mentors for our Esk Band players and helped them as the two bands performed several pieces of music together. It was truly a very special concert. Watching the potential for where music might take students, and what might be possible with practice, perseverance (GRIT) and enthusiasm was inspirational. Expressions of interest for Esk Band 2018 will be available soon. Please contact the office if you have further questions, or talk with me at school.
Operation Christmas Child Project
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this year’s project to provide a gift to a child in another country through this project. Operation Christmas Child helps children to understand and develop the concept of Gratitude – one of the character strengths identified as a ‘game changer’ for success. Representatives from the Perth Baptist Church collected our filled boxes on Friday, where they will be added to all others at a central depot and shipped to children in another country. We plan to participate again next year, with some minor modifications.

Perth Primary School Swimming Carnival
Our Grade 3-6 Swimming Carnival will be held on:
Wednesday 8 November
at Hagley Farm School Pool
Buses will leave school at 9:00am for a 9:45am start. Students will leave the venue by 1.45pm. It is an expectation that all students participate in as many events as possible, as there are events to suit all ability levels (see event order).
Students need to wear their sports uniform (clearly labelled with their name). The Hagley Farm School pool is an indoor heated facility, and students will need to bring warm clothing, lunch, plenty to drink, bathers, towel and a plastic bag/swimming bag for wet items. A House coloured swimming cap will be provided for all students on the day (paid for through school levies).
Students will be seated in House groups: Bramich, Hirst and Lyons. Parents and family members are welcome as there is plenty of seating provided on the spectator side of the pool.
A Perth Primary Swimming Team will be selected from the results on the day, as heats in all stroke events are timed.
Event order:
- 25m Freestyle (Grade 3-6)
- Across Pool - for students who didn’t take part in 25m freestyle
- 25m Breaststroke (Grade 3/4)
- 50m Breaststroke (Grade 5/6)
- 25m Backstroke (Grade 3-6)
- The Reverse Steeple Chase (noodle between legs and ducking under lane ropes) – for students who haven’t competed down the pool
- 50m Freestyle (Grade 4-6)

- 50m Backstroke (Grade 4-6)

- Kickboard across the pool – for students who haven’t competed down the pool

Swimming Caps in House Colours
All children will be provided with a swimming cap in House colours for the swimming carnival at Hagley to assist with recording processes. Children are welcome to bring their own silicon or mesh cap in House colours if they prefer to swim in this style of cap rather than one provided by the school.
