Principal’s Report
Welcome to Term 4. We hope everyone has enjoyed a refreshing break during the past few weeks and that all students are ready for a busy and rewarding final term of learning, building relationships and having fun. We look forward to a busy term with Grade 5 / 6 camp in just a few weeks as well as lots of other exciting learning and extension opportunities for students planned throughout the term.
Country Gold Carnivals
At the end of last term a number of PPS students proudly participated in the annual Country Gold Carnivals after being selected to represent the Northern Midlands East teams. This is a great honour and students and families feel rightly proud of their selection in these teams. We continue to hear reports of our students’ high-level sportsmanship as well as good skills and team play. Congratulations on a highly successful Country Gold campaign.... …. We are very proud of you all!
We know that regular participation in sports and active exercises helps to promote a healthy lifestyle and is a strong indicator of later health and social indicators. Daily physical education and other sporting and activity opportunities are provided to build these habits early. Brain research also shows that starting the day with physical activity also helps to boost learning and productivity. The daily PE program is co-ordinated by our Grade 6 leaders who are showing outstanding leadership and building initiative and responsibility by leading their groups each morning. Congratulations to all Grade 6 leaders. Well done..... You are doing a great job!
Tasmanian Trout Fishing Championships
On the last Monday of last term a group of 8 children travelled to Brumby's Creek at Cressy to enjoy a day's fishing and to defend our title as the Trout Fishing Champion Primary School. Clayton (gr 6, 2016) caught the winning trout last year but it was not to be this year with Ashtyn catching the only small fish. Students had a wonderful time, demonstrating exemplary co - operative skills. Many thanks to our volunteer helpers Danny and Chris and to Steve Muir and Ben Johnson who put their day jobs aside to accompany the group!
Scottish Exchange Study Tour

For the last week of term and the holiday break I travelled to Scotland as part of an international, self-funded exchange for Principals to stay with the Head Teacher (Principal) of a school in Linlithgow, Scotland. It was a wonderful experience to study another education system and to see and hear about similarities and differences to our Tasmanian system. I spent two weeks visiting a number of schools in West Lothian, Falkirk and Glasgow, talking with Principals about school improvement and attending a presentation by well-known speakers Kier Bloomer and Maggie Farrah. My host, Mrs Charlette Robertson, will visit and stay with me in July next year and spend time at Perth Primary and other Tasmanian schools, just as I have done. I look forward to sharing more information about my visit at other opportunities.
Esk Band Mentors
Next week members of the Clarence High School Band will present a concert and spend some time with members of our Esk Band to help them understand how their skills might develop with practice and persistence. At times when something is difficult it is wonderful to see how the hours of practice will be worthwhile and how the skills will look, sound and feel in the future. Watching, hearing and talking with students a few years older than themselves allows children to understand just how their own talents can develop if they apply themselves with steady persistence and a growth mindset. We look forward to enjoying the performance by the Clarence High School Band as they head towards home after touring the North West Coast of Tasmania. They will visit us on Thursday 26th October at 11.30am. Expressions of interest for ESK Band 2018 will be available soon.
Fred Hollows Humanity Award 2017
Congratulations to Jorja Turner, who travelled to Hobart today to be presented with a Fred Hollows Humanity Award at Parliament House in Hobart. Jorja’s proud family attended the ceremony, along with AP Jenny Clements, representing Perth Primary School. The Premier, Hon Will Hodgman presented the award to Jorja for her consideration towards others and her leadership and service to others in our school community.
Sun Safety Time
Term 4 is the beginning of our spring weather and the time for all members of our school community to dust off hats and remember sun safety to protect our skin from the damage the sun can cause. Hats now need to be worn for all outdoor play and lessons. Hats are available from the office and the uniform shop for $5.
