Principal’s Report
Last Friday we were extremely proud to host a visit by the Minister for Education, Hon Jeremy Rockliff and Mrs Bronnie Taylor, MLC from NSW. They came to school to look at the work of our School Nurse, Juanita De Vergier. Congratulations to Juanita for being nominated as an exemplary model of school nursing in action. The group wandered around the playground and saw respectful and engaged children at play and clearly demonstrating our Strive for Five. The group also heard about our focus on healthy lifestyles, health screening, the healthy canteen menu, and the work in classrooms to support this focus. I was incredibly proud of our students, staff, school community and the understandings they have developed about respectful relationships as this is what helps to make PPS the happy and productive learning environment our visitors saw as they walked around. There were many complimentary comments about the polite, respectful and engaged students they saw everywhere. Congratulations everyone! We are very proud of you.
Think U Know
This evening a representative from the Australian Federal Police will lead an information session for parents and interested family members about cyber safety. We are hopeful that representatives of every family will attend as almost every child in our school community has access to a device of some kind which is connected to the internet. Children are far more ICT savvy than many adults, and this means we need support to help keep children safe. This knowledge is critical for parents so that sensible and safe boundaries can be set at home to ensure children understand and stick to safe ICT practices. We look forward to your participation in the session starting at school at 6pm. Please RSVP to the office for organisational arrangements.
NAPLAN Online Readiness
This week students in grades 4 and 6 are participating in the NAPLAN Online Readiness test to check our readiness in terms of devices as well as how the tests actually work. Although we will receive some limited test results for students the purpose is more to assess system capability in readiness for NAPLAN to move online in Tasmania in 2019. Some other States will move to NAPLAN online next year.
Protecting Student Identity
Celebrating student successes at PPS and sharing the many positive achievements we have is an important part of our role as this helps to highlight our supportive and high-achieving culture. It also shows that learning and success is important and achievable, and provides examples of role models to which others can aspire. Recently we have been notified by the Department of Education that school newsletters are no longer to include students’ full names, or match student names directly to photographs. We know you will understand this is a strategy intended to protect children from any harm and we thank you for your understanding of this necessary change.
2018 Planning
We have already started some of the complex organisation needed to arrive at the best possible arrangements for next year’s structures. Class placement is one of the pieces in this puzzle. Teachers know their students and their learning needs very well and this is the primary reason for considering placement into next year’s class. Students are placed with learning buddies rather than best friends to ensure every student can learn well during the school day. Please contact me in writing by the end of term if you have information of an educational nature which is unknown to us, and may affect the class placement process later in the year. Please be aware we are unable to consider requests for particular teachers.
We are also very keen to hear about families joining our school, and students whose enrolment status will change for 2018, as number affect our ability to offer the range of high-quality programs available. Thank you for your assistance.
Strategic Planning
During the next few weeks we will be revising and rewriting our Strategic Plan for 2018 – 2021 which will guide the directions of our school for the next four year period. We have been working with students and some former students to gather their ideas. We will be working with staff soon and would like to hear from some parents who are keen to be involved in a short session to provide some ideas for these important directions into the future.
Schoolzine Feedback
Thank you to parents and members of our school community who have provided feedback about our new newsletter format. We have made some changes to the Schoolzine format in response to your messages already and we look forward to hearing more of your opinions as we publish new editions during the next few months.
Welcome and Farewells
We continue to welcome new families to our Launching into Learning sessions. Almost every week a new family to the Perth area attends one of the sessions for children birth – 4 years. Please spread the word to new families in Perth that enrolments for all grades are open now and warmly welcome. Following our Facebook page is the easiest way to keep up with our current news.

Kinder enrolments for 2018 are open!

We would also appreciate hearing from families whose enrolment status will change for 2018. Please let us know if you are not intended to be with us in 2018, or if you know of a family who is intending to enrol so that our information is as accurate as is possible. Forms may be collected and returned to the office.

SLEEP
Did you know?
- Poor sleep negatively affects learning and academic results
- In a US study students who received C, D & F results slept 25 minutes less and went to bed on average 40 minutes later than A & B students
- Students with higher grades report more total sleep, earlier school night bedtime and reduced week-end delays in sleep.
Healthy sleep is important for academic performance.
