Perth Primary School Calendar
From the Principal
Welcome back to Term 2, my favourite time of the year when all our beautiful school trees are awash with Autumn colours. It has been wonderful to see our students back at school recharged ready for another busy term.

If you are intending to watch multiple races, please make sure you exit the school grounds during the student play break time.
Step Challenge
In the lead up to our Cross Country Carnival and as part of our Eat Well, Move Well program, we are encouraging our school to get walking this May!! Each morning our entire school will join together for our annual step challenge. Students (and staff) record their steps each day which goes towards their class total, at the end of the three weeks we will see how far our school has travelled on foot!!

International Nurses Day – Monday 12 May
This week we celebrate International Nurses Day, we are extremely lucky to have the support of Nurse Bec at our school. She supports us every Monday through;
- Kindergarten health assessments
- Targeted vision and hearing screening
- Health education & promotion (class lessons/small groups)
Health education delivered includes topics such as, personal hygiene, oral care, sun safety, growth and development, healthy friendships, resilience, mindfulness, mental health and more.

Ditto
Last week Bravehearts presented the Ditto show to the majority of our Prep-Grade 2 students. Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Show is age appropriate, interactive and entertaining. It is designed to educate children through a fun journey of personal safety, through music and relatable characters. Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Program has been developed with oversight from Australia’s leading child protection and development experts, researchers, as well as educators, parents and carers and is aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Your child will have received a ‘Ditto book’ to take home which provides useful information to support families in having conversations about personal safety. Further information about the program can be found at Welcome to Bravehearts.

Illuminate
In 2025, the Northern Midlands Business Association (NMBA), the Northern Midlands Council and illuminate Education are again providing an amazing opportunity for Year 5-6 students across the Northern Midlands region to participate in a week-long learning event – the Illuminate Challenge Week.
The event was first held last year and was such a huge success that all of the organisations involved were very happy to again support this learning experience for our students.
Kinetic Transport are again sponsoring the event, providing free transport for every school to participate across the 5 days – an absolutely fantastic commitment to our community.
What is it?
The illuminate Challenge week is an opportunity for students to build skills in design thinking, collaboration and communication as they think about some of the “big problems” in our region, and how we might go about addressing these from a young person’s perspective. This challenge allows students to use skills from different learning disciplines and to work together in a team.
Adam Mostogl and the team from illuminate have been running these programs across Australia for many years, and as a Launceston-based organisation it’s fantastic for our students to have the chance to work with them.
State Athletics
Last Friday, thirteen students from Perth formed part of our Northern Midlands team participating at the State Athletics Carnival. Our school had the largest representation of all the schools in the Northern Midlands. They all did a wonderful job, it is a huge achievement to reach this level of representation, the highest we offer within Tasmania. All our athletes should be extremely proud of themselves. A huge well done to Torbyn who was the only para-athlete to represent the Northern Midlands, she did an amazing job competing against much older athletes.

Reader’s Cup
An enthusiastic group of readers have been busy preparing for the annual Readers' Cup. Students have committed to reading six books and taking notes on each text. At weekly meetings students are discussing themes occurring in the books and answering quiz questions in preparation for the in-school competition. Students have demonstrated outstanding teamwork to create a three minute presentation to convey their understanding of the themes in their chosen text. The winning team will compete against many other Northern schools to hopefully take the prize of the Readers’ Cup. We congratulate all participants on their dedication and collaboration over the last four weeks.
100 Nights of Reading
Over the last few weeks many students have received an icy pole for reading for 50 nights. Those students are now working towards the next reward of a games afternoon and a quality book to keep.
Library books, home readers, on-line books and books from your own bookshelf can be recorded. Any student who attends Tuesday morning reading club can record that book as well.
Prep – Grade 6 students who reach 200 nights by the end of the year will get the opportunity to spend the day at Riverbend Park as a reward for all their hard work! Our Kinder students won’t miss out either with a visit to the local train park. It is certainly not too late to start recording your reading! If you have lost your booklet, please see your classroom teacher or Mrs Biffin for a replacement.

Parent Teacher Conversations
We will be holding our student/parent/teacher conversations in the second last week of the term (23 June – 26 June). This is the first major opportunity to discuss student learning and progress this year. As part of this process:
- Conversations will be held in Week 9. We encourage our Grade 3-6 students to attend these meetings along with parents. Information about booking these conversations will be sent via Schoolzine later in the term
- Teachers are currently moderating work samples to prepare student reports using the 9-point scale aligned to the Australian Curriculum. These will be handed out at the conversations. We highly encourage all parents to make a time to meet with their child’s teacher
- These conversations are also an opportunity for students and parents to discuss any concerns or ideas that they have which may support their child’s learning journey
Prep students are not assessed against the 9-point scale mid-year and as such won’t receive a written report. We encourage all Prep parents to attend the parent- teacher conversations as these will be most important to share learning progress with families.
5-6 Sport
Next week is the start of 5-6 Sport. Our students are very lucky to be involved in the Northern Midlands sports exchange on a weekly basis playing against other schools in our region. There are a number of other events on during Term 2 which means we only get three games however the exchange will continue into Term 3. The exchange will give our students the opportunity to try a new sport, meet students from other schools and participate in a team environment. Parents are welcome to attend to watch but we do ask that you stay off the playing area and away from students as per our Safeguarding requirements.
