Term 3 - Week 3 (7 August 2024)
Perth Primary School Calendar
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
A big welcome back to our school community for Term 3. It was lovely to talk to students about their holidays and hear about some exciting and informative travels, especially around our home state! Although it may be winter, it is great to see families finding the time to visit parts of Tasmania.
Olympic fever has hit our school, we are seeing lots of classes using the Olympics for a stimulus for learning. Whether it be numeracy challenges, STEM, literacy or HaSS, there is plenty of excitement. A number of classes are running their own ‘Potato Olympics’ and this is proving to be a very engaging and competitive event!
We will also be cheering on our own ex Perth student, Georgia Baker as she competes in her third Olympics in track cycling. Our students have created a video to wish her luck!
3-4 Passive Learning Space update
You may have noticed that we have had some work completed in the 3-4 play area. We have had some concrete removed in to open up some more play spaces and during the next holidays we will be laying artificial turf in the area. This area is a work in progress, we are completing it in stages due to cost restraints. Our students have helped come up with ideas and put forward suggestions to improve this space!
Swimming and Water Safety Program – Week 5 & 6
The Department for Education, Children and Young People provide a Swimming and Water Safety Program for all Year 3, 4 and 5 students in Tasmanian Government Schools and Year 6 students assessed as being at-risk at the end of the Year 5 program. This year our program will run from Monday 19 August to Friday 30 August. It is expected that all students participate in the program.
The program has a strong emphasis on:
- water safety, including boat safety.
- using personal floatation devices
- survival swimming
- reach to rescue.
- entering aquatic environments safely
- efficient stroke development
- building swimming stamina.
These skills build the foundation for safe participation in aquatic activities.
Country Gold Representative Teams
At the end of Term 2 and beginning of Term 3, trials for the Northern Midlands representative teams were held. It is always a hard decision for coaches selecting students for trials, taking into consideration skill level, suitability for positions and also coachability along with sportsmanship. There are some cases where students are selected for trials in a sport that they may not participate in for Friday Sport. There may be a number of reasons for this, including too many numbers in their selected sport, students wanting a break from the sport they play all the time outside of school or those who would just like to try a different sport.
We are very proud of all our students who participated in the trial day and especially how they handled themselves with either the excitement of being selected or the disappointment of not making the team. The Country Gold tournament will be held on Thursday 19 September at various venues with the exception of the Girls Football which participate on Friday 30 August.
Congratulations to the following students who have been selected.

Staffing updates
It was lovely to welcome some new faces to our Teacher Assistant team this term, Isabel McIntosh-Lucas and Louis Davey. Isabel will be working in PA and Louis will be based in 2-3A. It was especially good to be able to offer Louis a contract after he completed his teaching practicum with Mrs Colson.
Miss Wrankmore had an exciting Term 2 holiday, she got married and enjoyed a beautiful honeymoon in Queensland. 2024 is turning out to be a huge year for her as we farewell her in Week 7, as she heads off on maternity leave. Miss Hannah Lockhart will welcome us on Prep/1B for the remainder of the year.
Reading at Perth Primary School
Children becoming confident readers remains our focus in Term 3. Teachers spend many after-school meetings looking at our students’ reading skills and learning more about current evidence-based best practices. We are proud of the students progress and continue to provide feedback and targeted lessons for further learning.
We anticipate an exciting day on Tuesday 13 August as students arrive to school dressed as a book character. We hope for everyone to participate, and we encourage those who do not want to wear any costumes items to bring an item that connects with their book. Please talk to you class teacher if you have any questions.
We have passed the halfway mark of The Premier’s Reading Challenge. The website has book recommendations and the option for children to provide a book review. If your child has taken their recording sheet home, they are to be returned by 23 August.

Olympic Torch
This week Mrs Fleming brought in her Olympic Torch from when she participated in the 2000 Olympics Torch Relay. The students loved having the opportunity to holp an authentic piece of the Olympics
Daikin Cup
Congratulations to our Grade 5/6 sports teams for regaining the Daikin Cup against Evandale. Thanks to Christopher W for supporting Miss Lovell as Assistant Coach of the football team, while Mrs Dean was away. Go Perth!
Every school day counts!
As we move into the second half of the school year, sometimes regular school attendance can be challenging. There are so many reasons to go to school. It’s a chance to be around friends, learn new things, grow and have fun.
For tips on creating better attendance habits, visit the Anything can happen website.
Please talk to us if you’re having trouble getting your child to school. We’re here to help.
