Term 2 - Week 8 (20 June 2024)
Perth Primary School Calendar
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we approach the end of another busy term, it’s important to reflect on the journey we’ve shared. With the winter weather settling in, we are seeing a lot more sickness amongst our school community. Whilst there are times when students need to be at home because they are sick, we are noticing a huge increase in the number of students with attendance concerns. Regular attendance is extremely important for academic growth, but also very important to build social connections. Each day at school is an opportunity to learn, grow, build and sustain friendships.
Parent Teacher Conversations
A reminder that student/parent/teacher conversations will be held next week. All parents should have received information about these upcoming conversations via Schoolzine. This is the first major opportunity to discuss student learning and progress this year. You may have noticed that there has already been some ‘evidences of learning’ posted on Seesaw in preparation for these conversations. This term your child has completed an evidence of learning for English, Mathematics, Art (Grade 3-4 to 5-6) and HaSS (Prep – Grade 2-3).
As part of this process:
- We encourage our Grade 3-6 students to attend these meetings along with parents.
- Teachers are currently moderating work samples to prepare student reports using the 9 point scale aligned to the Australian Curriculum. These will be handed out at the conversations. We highly encourage all parents to make a time to meet with their child’s teacher.
- These conversations are also an opportunity for students and parents to discuss any concerns or ideas that they have which may support their child’s learning journey.
Prep students are not assessed against the 9 point mid year and as such won’t receive a written report. As such, parent teacher conversations will be most important for prep students.
Illuminate
Our Grade 5-6 students are extremely lucky to have the opportunity to participate in the Illuminate Education program in conjunction with other Northern Midlands schools during this week.
Our students are working in teams of seven across four days to present a business plan to solve come up with a solution to the community problem below;
Your task for the Illuminate Community Challenge is to design a solution that will bring visitors to the Northern Midlands and share what makes it special. Think about what you love and what you think should be shared about your community, and what could you create that will bring people and help them to experience your region. Your solution can be anything from a product or an experience, accommodation or food solution and more. Think about what you can do to share what makes your region special!
Northern Midlands Cross Country
On Thursday 6 June, our cross-country team headed to Deloraine for the NM Carnival. This was the first time Deloraine have hosted the carnival, the weather was beautiful despite a challenging course which was quite a bit longer than our school course.
All our students did an amazing job not only trying their hardest but also supporting every member of our team. A big thanks to parents and friends that cheered our students along as well!
A special congratulations to Brayden and Armani who bought home shields in the Grade 4 boys and Grade 5 girls races.
Country Gold Trials
In addition to our Grade 5-6 Friday sports exchange, some students are also invited to try out for Northern Midlands representative teams that compete at the AFLW Gala Day and Country Gold Carnivals in boys and girls football, soccer, netball and hockey. The selection day for these teams is Friday 5 July. Students are selected by their school coach to attend trials and then selection into the teams is by the Northern Midlands East coaches for each respective team. This is a great opportunity to represent Perth as part of the Northern Midlands East teams. The ALFW Gala Day will be held on Friday 30 August and the Country Gold Carnival is held on Thursday 13 September. We wish all our students selected for the trials the best of luck.
Duty of Care Hours
We are noticing a number of students are arriving at school very early, a reminder that we ask that students are not on site prior to 8:30am as this is when our duty of care begins as we have teachers on duty and classrooms are open. Additionally, after 3:30pm we are having a number of students coming to the office. A reminder that students utilising the school grounds after school should be supervised by an adult.
Feeder High School Transition visits
Over the next few weeks and moving into Term 3, our Grade 5-6 will be visiting both Kings Meadows and Cressy schools to participate in Challenge Days and other transition activities. This is a great opportunity for our students to experience what our feeder schools have to offer to support their choice of high schools for Grade 7. If you have any questions regarding high school visits or other aspects of transition to Grade 7, please talk to Miss Doran.
Readers’ Cup
Twenty-five Grade 5-6 students took part in the Readers’ Cup quiz and three minute creative challenge. The higher than ever before quiz scores demonstrated the commitment to reading the five books they read this term. Students took the stage with courage to display their understanding of the texts through plays, dance and PowerPoints. We wish Dulcie, Erin, Evie, Harper, Phoenix and Evie all the best when they represent our school at the interschool competition.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
This year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge will be held from 17 June to 23 August. Students will be given a reading log to record the books they complete.
The Challenge is not a competition, but a way to encourage you to develop a love of reading for life. No matter what you aspire to do or be, reading and literacy skills will help you get there.
A message from our Premier, Jeremy Rockliff
I encourage all Tasmanian students from Kinder to Year 12 to take part, no matter what your reading level. Whether you’re a bookworm or just starting your reading journey, this challenge is for you!
It’s not about how many books you read, but about the joy and excitement of exploring new stories, characters, and ideas.
And for families – you can help your child get involved in the challenge by reading with them, talking to them about what they are reading and providing lots of encouragement!
So grab something to read and challenge yourself!
The Walk – Step Up Together
Last week, thirteen of our Grade 5-6 students joined ex-premier the Hon. Peter Gutwein for the Perth leg of his 350km walk for Step Up Together. The Walk aims to spotlight the challenges faced by our migrant and refugee communities while celebrating the strength that diversity brings to Tasmania. Our students were also joined by Northern Midlands Mayor, Mary Knowles. Evie and Chris spoke on behalf of our school, they talked about how economic migration had a significant impact on Tasmania in the past and that we are still seeing the benefits of those migrants in Tasmania now.
